Anouvong by Heritage Line, Mekong River

Heritage Line’s latest addition recreates its “savoir-vivre” once more in Laos
with luxury cruises on the remote upper Mekong River.

Vientiane | Luang Prabang

Remote and rarely visited by tourists, the upper Mekong awaits intrepid explorers looking to get-off-the-beaten track with Heritage Line’s newest cruise addition, Anouvong. Often overlooked over the popular lower Mekong cruises between Vietnam and Cambodia, experiencing the Mighty Mekong in Laos provides glimpses of misty verdant mountains, wild elephants, thundering waterfalls, and secluded ethnic minority villages. Lasting 3, 7, or 9 days, the ship sails different itineraries alternating between the Thai-Lao border (Golden Triangle near Chiang Rai), the cultural mecca of Luang Prabang, and the laid-back capital, Vientiane.

Anouvong boasts deep dark wood throughout its frame and furniture inspired from the French-Indochine era. The 10 suites held within the ship do an excellent job of encapsulating Lao motifs, colours, and designs on the ceilings, walls, and interior décor. Peer out the floor-to-ceiling windows to private sleek French balconies, a fine place to take in the exquisite landscape outside.  Educational presentations about local culture, history, people and more are given by dedicated experts in the stylish café-bar lounge, while on-shore activities include access to cultural demonstrations varying from dance routines and musical performances to spiritual expressions like the Baci ceremony. Tai Chi, guided meditations, and spa treatments are also part of the onboard experience for wellness connoisseurs.

Trip Reviews

We went on the new Anouvong cruise from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang and had a lovely experience. The boat is beautifully fitted out with gorgeous cabins, we enjoyed our little balcony especially in the morning when the weather was cooler. The excursions were very well organised, with great guiding special mention to the elephant sanctuary and the kayaking. Meals were all authentic and excellent and were enjoyed by all including the two 15 year olds in our party. Tips - brand new US$ required everywhere in Laos with no tears or even folds, these are required for the Laos visa, preferable to do the evisa. Local currency Kip for any small purchases you may like to make in villages. We took school supplies to donate which were v gratefully received, we thought the tiny primary school in Ban Khok Luang was the most in need with 3 classes in 1 room and just a chalk board. If travelling in the same direction would recommend a cabin on the port side (right) so you see the river not the bank when docking. GDS, TripAdvisor
