This morning begins with a deep dive into Vietnam’s resilient past at the Vietnam Military History Museum, where relics of ancient weapons and towering aircraft whisper stories of courage and sacrifice. From there, step into the sobering walls of Hoa Lo Prison, once a French colonial jail and later known to American POWs as the “Hanoi Hilton.” Alternatively, you may choose to explore the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, a UNESCO World Heritage Site layered with centuries of dynastic history.

Pause for a traditional Hanoian lunch before the pace shifts to something more leisurely. Settle into a cyclo, a three-wheeled bicycle taxi, and let the city’s heartbeat carry you through the maze-like streets of the Old Quarter. Lanterns sway above as shopkeepers call out from age-old storefronts. Rest at a local café to savor a silky cup of Vietnamese coffee or a cooling bowl of chè dessert, before ending the day with a tranquil stroll around Hoan Kiem Lake, where legends linger beneath the waters.

Rise to the rhythm of Hanoi and set off with a local chef for a morning market tour. Among the bustling stalls, you’ll select herbs, vegetables, and spices that sing with freshness. Together, prepare four iconic Hanoian dishes: the crunchy Nem (fried spring rolls), fragrant Bun Cha, delicate Nom Hoa Chuoi (banana flower salad), and the indulgent Ca Phe Trung, Hanoi’s famed egg coffee. Taste your creations, then enjoy a leisurely afternoon before your overnight adventure begins. 

In the evening, check out of your hotel and transfer to Hanoi Train Station. Settle into your sleeper cabin as the train departs into the night, carrying you north toward the misty mountains of Sapa.

Arrive at Lao Cai Station at dawn and freshen up over breakfast before winding your way up scenic mountain roads to Sapa. Spend this morning for an unforgettable ascent of Mt. Fansipan, the “Roof of Indochina.” Once requiring days of arduous trekking, today you’ll soar skyward by funicular and cable car, reaching the 3,143-meter summit in just 30 minutes. From the peak, the Hoang Lien Mountains sprawl beneath you, valleys cloaked in clouds, and on clear days, the horizon stretches all the way to China.

Head back to Sapa in the afternoon with plenty of time to independently wander around Sapa’s streets. Make sure to visit Notre Dame Cathedral in the town’s square and try some of Sapa’s most popular snacks, roasted local chestnuts with salt and cheese. If you’re into fashion and textiles, there are a number of workshops we can help to arrange such as indigo dyeing, H’mong batik, and Red Dzao embroidery classes, too!

Awake to the cool, fresh mountain air. After breakfast, journey into the heart of the Hoang Lien Mountains to Ban Khoang village, where the Red Dzao people, known for their embroidered attire and herbal wisdom, carry on age-old traditions. Their red headscarves and shimmering silver jewelry tell stories as vibrant as their ancestral knowledge of medicinal plants.

Enjoy lunch by a murmuring stream before continuing to Ta Giang Phinh, a remote valley home to the Black H’mong. Stroll past stone houses, terraced fields, and buffalo-dotted pastures, where life moves to the timeless rhythm of the mountains.

Return to Sapa for a short rest, then transfer back to Lao Cai for your evening train. Drift to sleep as the train takes you back to Hanoi.

Arrive in Hanoi at dawn and enjoy breakfast before departing for the emerald waters of Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Board your overnight vessel and let the otherworldly seascape unfurl - limestone karsts rising from jade waters, hidden lagoons, and secluded coves.

Throughout the day, join excursions tailored to your ship’s itinerary: kayak through floating villages, step into vast caverns glittering with stalactites, or bask on uninhabited beaches. Between adventures, savor exquisite meals of seafood and Vietnamese-inspired fusion. As the sun dips low, recline on the sundeck with a drink in hand, watching twilight paint the bay in hues of gold and rose.

Awake to dawn breaking over the limestone towers and join a serene Tai Chi session on deck. After breakfast and a final excursion, disembark and journey back to Hanoi for your flight south to Danang. A short drive delivers you to Hoi An, the lantern-lit jewel of central Vietnam, where centuries-old streets, vibrant markets, and riverside charm await in this enchanting UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Wander into the charm of Hoi An Ancient Town, where time seems suspended in its ochre-colored walls and winding streets. Visit Chua Ong Pagoda, scented with incense, and the ornate Phuc Kien Assembly Hall honoring the Goddess of the Sea. Step into the centuries-old Tan Ky House and cross the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge, each corner whispering tales of traders from distant lands.

After a local lunch, continue to Cam Thanh Village, gliding in bamboo basket boats through lush nipa palm forests. Share stories with local fishermen and try your hand at their traditional casting techniques. The evening is yours to explore - shop for lanterns, artwork, or bespoke clothing in one of Vietnam’s tailoring capitals.

Savor a day of freedom in this riverside town. Design your own garments with a local tailor, cycle through emerald rice paddies, or simply relax along golden beaches. Whatever path you choose, Hoi An promises charm at every turn.

Bid farewell to Hoi An and travel north through Da Nang to Hue, Vietnam’s imperial heart. After lunch, enjoy an afternoon at leisure to soak in the city’s tranquil ambiance.

Step back into Vietnam’s regal past as you explore the UNESCO-listed Imperial Citadel and the Forbidden Purple City once reserved for emperors. Follow the Perfume River to the elegant Thien Mu Pagoda, where the sound of its great bell resonates across the city.

Pause for a traditional Hue-style lunch before visiting the serene tomb of Emperor Minh Mang, nestled among gardens and lotus ponds, and the striking tomb of Emperor Khai Dinh, an architectural blend of East and West.

Overnight in Hue.

Today, journey through Quang Tri Province, a land rich in history and resilience. Visit the former Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), which once divided North and South Vietnam, and cross the iconic Hien Luong Bridge at the 17th parallel - a powerful symbol of the country’s past. Continue to the remarkable Vinh Moc Tunnels, where entire villages once lived deep underground, creating a hidden world of survival during the intense bombings between 1967 and 1972.

Continue north to Dong Hoi, the gateway to the natural wonders of Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003, this remarkable landscape is home to 472 caves discovered over the past 35 years, with a combined length of 254 kilometres, many of which are considered among the most spectacular in the world.

Journey deep into Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park today, starting with the magnificent Paradise Cave, one of Asia’s longest dry caves, stretching approximately 31.4 kilometers. Step into its underground cathedral, where vaulted chambers soar 72 meters high and span 150 meters wide, adorned with shimmering stalactites and nature-sculpted pillars. Wander along the first kilometer of wooden pathways as golden light casts a magical glow over the formations, each more breathtaking than the last.

Continue to Commander Cave, also known as the 7-Storey Cave. This multi-level cave once served as an important command post during the Vietnam War thanks to its strategic location. As you explore its seven levels, you’ll pass hidden chambers, historical relics, and traces of wartime life, set among impressive stalactites and stalagmites. Beyond its historical value, the cave’s striking formations and calm atmosphere make it a memorable stop on your journey through the underground world of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park.

After lunch, board a traditional boat on the serene Son River to explore Phong Nha Cave, one of the world’s longest water caves. Glide through the cavern as illuminated rock formations reflect upon the still waters. Step onto sandy banks and follow the winding path deeper inside, marveling at the grandeur of this subterranean wonder. 

Return to Dong Hoi for a well-earned rest.

Say farewell to central Vietnam and fly south to the energetic heart of the country: Ho Chi Minh City. The afternoon is free to explore boulevards alive with scooters, French colonial landmarks, and buzzing markets.

Set out on the waters of the legendary Mekong Delta by premium speedboat, where river life unfolds in vibrant color. Wander through fruit orchards heavy with ripe mangoes and rambutans, explore lively riverside markets bursting with produce and fish, and capture photographs at every turn.

Step inside a traditional farmhouse to sip fresh coconut water and Mekong whisky, then pause at a tranquil pagoda that doubles as an orphanage run by Buddhist monks. Your journey continues to a vivid Cao Dai Temple, before concluding with a rustic riverside lunch, a perfect reflection on a day rich with flavors and humanity.

Your journey through Vietnam’s land of wonders comes to an end. A private transfer will take you to Tan Son Nhat International Airport, where you’ll bid farewell to this beautiful country!

PAYMENT 

A non-refundable deposit of 10% of the total booking is required within three (3) days from the date of confirmation. The balance payment is due 45 days prior to the tour commencement date. For bookings made less than 45 days, full payment is required. Bookings will be cancelled if payments are not received by the due date(s).

Payment can be made via bank transfer or credit cards.

CANCELLATION

Confirmed bookings must be cancelled by the party leader in writing (by email) and this will only be effective once the written cancellation is confirmed by ATA Holidays. Cancellation will be subject to the following cancellation fees from the date the written cancellation is received:

• more than 45 days prior to the tour commencement date - 10% of total cost

• between 31 and 45 days prior to the tour commencement date - 25% of total cost

• between 16 and 30 days prior to the tour commencement date - 50% of total cost

• within 15 days prior to the tour commencement date or “no show” - 100% of total cost.

AMENDMENT

Requests for amendments to confirmed bookings must be submitted in writing via email by the party leader. While ATA Holidays will endeavor to accommodate all reasonable amendment requests, we cannot guarantee that such requests can always be fulfilled. If the requested amendments are possible, a revised quotation will be provided, which may include additional charges arising from the amendment itself, fees imposed by Third-Party Travel Providers, or administrative fees applied by ATA Holiday. In all cases, the following amendment fees shall apply:

• For amendments made more than 45 days prior to the tour commencement date: a charge of $100 per amendment for itineraries of less than seven (7) nights, or $200 per amendment for itineraries of seven (7) nights or longer.

• For amendments made within 45 days of the tour commencement date: the standard cancellation fees outlined above shall apply, and new arrangements will be charged at the prevailing rates.

No cancellation or amendment fees shall be applied in cases where changes arise due to a breach of contractual obligations or an error on the part of ATA Holidays, or when such changes are made by a Third-Party Travel Provider through no fault of the customer.
